WPMU DEV Hub alternatives for agencies in 2026, and when to stay
Five options, priced at 10, 25, 50 and 100 sites, and the cases where the WPMU DEV membership is the better deal. Prices checked 8 October 2026.
WPMU DEV in one paragraph
WPMU DEV is a membership more than a management tool. One price buys the Hub dashboard, the Pro plugin suite (Hummingbird, Smush, SmartCrawl, Forminator, Defender and more), white-label billing and reseller tools, a white-label client portal and Hub Tickets, 24/7 support, a $144 hosting credit, and 5–50 GB of backup storage by plan. Regular annual pricing works out to $15 a month for 1 site, $25 for 3, $50 for 10 and $100 for unlimited sites, and the company is SOC 2 Type II certified (pricing page, checked 8 October 2026). If you already host with WPMU DEV and use its plugins, the membership is hard to beat on value.
Why agencies look for an alternative
You pay for a suite you may not use. Much of the value is the plugin suite and the hosting credit. Agencies that standardise on other caching, security or SEO plugins, or host elsewhere, pay for parts of the bundle they don’t use.
Backups live in WPMU DEV’s storage, with caps. Storage is 5 GB on Basic, 10 on Standard, 20 on Plus and 50 on Premium. Some agencies, and some client contracts, want archives in a bucket the agency owns.
The step from 10 to 11 sites is steep. 10 sites cost $50 a month; the 11th needs the $100 plan.
Client tickets are not a reason to leave: WPMU DEV has had Hub Tickets since September 2024, added email-to-ticket in June 2026, and its pricing page lists Tickets on every plan. If your clients already use them, that is a reason to stay.
Monthly cost at 10, 25, 50 and 100 sites
List prices in US dollars a month, on monthly billing unless noted. The green cell is the lowest price in each column. No tool wins every row.

How to read this. At unlimited sites WPMU DEV is a dollar more than our Scale plan ($100 against $99), and it includes the plugin suite, 24/7 support, a hosting credit and SOC 2 Type II, none of which we offer. If you will use those, it is the better deal. Up to 100 sites we are clearly cheaper ($19 against $50 at 10 sites, $19 against $100 at 25, $49 against $100 at 50 and 100); past 100 sites the difference is that dollar. WP Umbrella’s base price is lower than ours only at 4–8 sites, and MainWP Pro is the cheapest of all from 26 sites up if you will host the dashboard yourself. Run your own mix through the cost calculator.
How the table is costed: ManageWP with the six add-ons most care plans sell (backups, uptime, security check, advanced reports, white label and vulnerability protection, $9.75 a site), or its $150 all-in-one bundle for up to 100 sites when that is cheaper. WP Umbrella in dollars; it bills €1.99 a site. MainWP without the server you host it on. WPMU DEV at its regular annual price, not a first-year promotion. WPClientHub’s help desk starts on Agency ($49).

The 5 alternatives
WPClientHub is ours, so it is listed first and you should read it with that in mind. Every other entry says what it does better than WPMU DEV Hub, and what it does worse.
1. WPClientHub
Best for: care-plan agencies on any host that want backups in storage they own and one flat bill, without a plugin suite.
Host-neutral: we sell no hosting. Free for 3 sites, and every new account starts with a 14-day Agency trial with no card. Then Studio $19 a month (25 sites), Agency $49 (100 sites) and Scale $99 (unlimited sites under fair use; past 500 we raise the ceiling on request). Yearly billing is two months free ($190, $490, $990). Site 101 moves you from $49 to $99.
What it does today:
- A 0–100 health score for every site.
- Safe updates: a restore point first, a screenshot diff after, an approval queue and optional automatic rollback.
- Backups made on the client’s own server and copied to storage you own (any S3-compatible bucket such as Backblaze B2, Cloudflare R2 or Wasabi, or SFTP). We never hold the archive.
- Vulnerability matching with plain-English fixes, and a daily file-integrity check.
- 60-second uptime checks confirmed by a second check (from one region today), plus SSL and domain expiry monitoring.
- Performance trends, SEO Health and AI Visibility.
- Branded client reports, and client billing through your own Stripe account or direct invoices, with no platform fee.
- From Agency: the client help desk with a magic-link portal and AI diagnosis, and a white-label plugin.
- New in October 2026, in the WPClientHub One 2.0 plugin (rolling out to sites now, and off until you switch it on): page caching on every plan, SEO management from Studio, and forms and image optimization from Agency.
Where WPMU DEV Hub is better: a plugin suite with years of field use (our caching, forms and image modules arrived in October 2026 and are off until you switch them on), 24/7 support, SOC 2 Type II, a hosting credit, reseller hosting and domains, client tickets with email-to-ticket, and a much longer track record.
Where WPClientHub is different: backups stay on the client’s server and storage you own, with no quota; we sell no hosting; help desk requests on Agency and Scale come with an AI diagnosis (one credit each); client billing has no platform fee; and $99 covers unlimited sites. Monitoring, performance and SEO checks, vulnerability matching and the AI checks run on our side, so one plugin is all a client site carries. Full head-to-head: WPClientHub vs. WPMU DEV.
The honest caveat: WPClientHub launched in 2026, so it has a fraction of the track record of everything else on this page. Run it next to your current tool before you move a portfolio.
2. WP Umbrella
Best for: agencies under about 45 sites that want the simplest hosted per-site tool.
$2.19 (€1.99) per site per month, no minimum, a 14-day trial with no card, and 10% off when you prepay a year. The base price includes encrypted incremental backups kept 50 days on EU infrastructure, uptime and performance monitoring, vulnerability checks against Patchstack data every 6 hours, domain, SSL and PHP error monitoring, white-label reports, a public API and MCP access, and unlimited team members. Add-ons: security (firewall and malware scanning) $2 a site, hourly backups $2.49 a site (pricing page, checked 8 October 2026).
Better than WPMU DEV Hub: cheaper than WPMU DEV at every size up to 45 sites, no plugin suite or hosting to buy into, and the community favourite in The Admin Bar’s July 2026 roundup, rated 4.9 on G2. Weaker: the bill grows with every site ($219 a month at 100 sites, $419 with the security add-on), backups sit in WP Umbrella’s storage rather than yours, and there is no client help desk or client billing. WPClientHub vs. WP Umbrella.
3. ManageWP
Best for: agencies at 50 to 100 sites that want the cheapest hosted bundle, or anyone happy on a free tier.
Owned by GoDaddy since 2016. The free core covers unlimited sites: a monthly cloud backup, security and performance checks, client reports, one-click login and update management. Safe updates and clone & migrate need the paid backups add-on. Add-ons are priced per site per month: backups $2.75, vulnerability protection $2, and uptime, security check, performance check, advanced reports, white label, SEO ranking and link monitor $1.25 each. The all-in-one bundle is $150 a month for up to 100 sites and is aimed at agencies with more than 25 (pricing page, checked 8 October 2026).
Better than WPMU DEV Hub: a free tier with no site cap, and per-site add-ons so you pay only for what each site needs, with no plugin suite or hosting to buy into. Weaker: add-on prices pile up below about 25 sites, backups live in ManageWP’s cloud, and The Admin Bar’s July 2026 roundup notes its uptime monitoring “has had reliability issues”. WPClientHub vs. ManageWP.
4. MainWP
Best for: technical agencies that want to own the dashboard.
Self-hosted: a free, open-source WordPress plugin you install on your own “dashboard” site, for unlimited sites. MainWP Pro adds the premium extensions (client reports, white label, client profiles, an Atarim integration for client feedback and more) for $29 a month, $199 a year or $599 once, unlimited sites, with a 30-day money-back guarantee (pricing page, checked 8 October 2026).
Better than WPMU DEV Hub: the lowest monthly price in the table above from 26 sites up, one flat price at any size, and your data stays on your own server. Weaker: you host, update and secure the dashboard yourself, backups and uptime come from extensions and services you set up, and there is no built-in client help desk. What you gain and lose leaving MainWP.
5. Modular DS
Best for: agencies that want included backup storage and AI-assisted updates without a plugin suite.
A newer hosted tool from Spain, priced in tiers with flexible overage: Freelance $16 a month (10 sites), Starter $34 (35), Business $59 (75) and Enterprise $96 (125), with 25–500 GB of backup storage included, an AI “Update Copilot”, a white-label plugin and an MCP server. Its page shows prices with a euro/dollar toggle (pricing page, checked 8 October 2026). The Admin Bar calls it “the one to watch”.
Better than WPMU DEV Hub: cheaper at every size we priced ($16 against $50 at 10 sites, $34 against $100 at 25, $59 against $100 at 50, $96 against $100 at 100), an AI “Update Copilot” and an MCP server, with no plugin suite or hosting to buy into. Weaker: site caps with overage rather than one flat price, a shorter track record (3,000+ agencies by its own count), and no client help desk.
When you should stay on WPMU DEV
If you host with WPMU DEV, use its Pro plugins on most client sites, run client tickets in the Hub and manage more than 10 sites, the $100 membership replaces several subscriptions and includes a hosting credit. Stay. Look around when you standardise on other plugins or another host, or when a client wants backups in storage you own.
Leaving without losing backups
Run both tools side by side for one backup cycle. Connect sites to the new tool in batches of 10, let it finish a first backup to your own storage, restore one site from it, then remove the WPMU DEV plugins you no longer need from that batch. Download any backups you must keep before you cancel, since the archives sit in WPMU DEV’s storage. If you also host with WPMU DEV, moving hosts is a separate project: do it site by site once the management switch is stable. The steps in our ManageWP migration checklist apply almost unchanged.
